Visegrad Four says Russia’s Nord Stream-2 politically motivated
WARSAW, Oct 17 (PRIME) -- Leaders of the Visegrad Four group – comprising Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary – agreed that there is no economic reason in construction of Russia’s Nord Stream-2 natural gas pipeline and that the project is politically motivated, Polish President Andrzej Duda said in a news conference on October 15.
“We have discussed the planned Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline, and the position of our countries is unanimous – all presidents support (the opinion) that there is no economic grounds for this investment and they are sure that this investment has political motivation as its basis,” Duda said.
He added that the project will prevent creation of an efficient energy union in the E.U.
The Nord Stream-2 project envisages construction of two lines of a gas pipeline with an annual capacity of up to 55 billion cubic meters, running from the Russian shore to Germany under the Baltic Sea.
In August, Russian gas giant Gazprom and its partners in the Nord Stream-2 project, Engie, OMV, Shell, Uniper, and Wintershall, withdrew their notification of plans to create a joint venture for the project sent earlier to Poland. Previously, the partners sent the notification of creation of the joint venture to the Polish antimonopoly regulator and expected its permission to buy stakes in the joint company, but Poland objected. Now the partners are working on a new model to implement the project.
